Course description

Critical Thinking: Communicating with Data

Business leaders need their employees to be able to find solutions to important problems. Business processes are like “control knobs” — by changing a process, we can impact the results for our customers and business. To understand which processes to change, how to change them, and whether that change is effective requires targeted data collection and analysis. Too often, teams, overwhelmed with existing data, analyze it every which way hoping to “see something” that will give them insight. This course will turn that on its head and let the business question lead to the data and analysis. Then the team needs to effectively communicate the results of that analysis to leadership and other employees.

This course provides a simple and logical framework that can be applied in almost any business setting. Process is cast in a larger role of “value stream” — everything from the supplier to the customer. The need for targeted data arises as we ask specific questions about the ability of the process to meet customer and business needs. Simple, graphical methods for baselining performance as well as understanding causes of performance issues are presented. Participants see tools and methods applied to a case study and then will apply the approach on their own work processes to better understand their customer’s needs, the processes that fulfill those needs, and how to use data to solve important business problems.
