Group Diversity and Inclusion Leadership

In an increasingly global economy and diverse workforce, a strong understanding of the history and current demographics of diversity combined with knowledge and skills to manage a diverse workforce will give organizations a competitive edge in productivity, innovation, worker retention, and recruitment.

This course offers an understanding of the roots of diversity management and training to help support the effectiveness of leading and managing diversity and inclusion in the 21st century. We discuss questions such as:

  • What are the definitions of Equal Employment Opportunity, Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion? How are they the same? How are they different?
  • What is it important for managers and supervisors to know about diversity, and how can we use that knowledge to create a more inclusive, supportive, and productive workforce?
  • What are the potential “blind spots” that managers and supervisors often are unaware of, and how can these “blind spots” potentially impact relationships with their work teams, colleagues, and customers/clients?
  • What are the most important concepts for managers and supervisors to know about the “head (intellectual understanding), heart (perceptions, emotions), and hands (application, what to do)” work needed to become an effective diversity leader and manager for their organization?

Research supports the widely held belief that valuing diversity in thought, experience, gender, and other dimensions in an inclusive work environment consistently creates a higher level of innovation, productivity, and financial reward. This introductory course defines the business case for diversity and inclusion and identifies practical skills to help create a more supportive work environment for all types of diversity.

This course is highly participatory and experiential. Participants leave with valuable data and facts, tools, tips, techniques, and experience that will enhance their understanding of key concepts involving diversity and inclusion in the 21st century and support their ability to manage complexity and change.

Who should attend?

This course benefits all levels of managers and supervisors (can be modified for individual contributors) and other individuals who must collaborate with others to get work done. These would include: team co-leaders, departmental directors, project managers, and others in leadership roles.
