Course description

Virtual Team Leadership

Leading a team whose members are geographically distributed calls for a special set of skills and know-how. Among the recurring challenges virtual team leaders struggle with are: building trust across time and distance, cultivating strong working relationships, creating a level playing field among all team members, managing performance from afar, galvanizing and mobilizing team members to achieve shared goals, and keeping team members actively engaged amidst competing priorities.

In this highly interactive virtual workshop series, we use a case study as a springboard for discussion, using a combination of audioconferencing and an online meeting room to foster active engagement and capture ideas as they emerge. We modify the emphasis of each module based on participants’ responses to prework.

Who should attend?

This workshop series is intended for individuals who lead distributed teams, whether their members include direct reports, project teams, extended teams, or other stakeholders. This workshop series is designed for a cohort of up to 15 participants to encourage questions, examples, and sharing of knowledge and experience.

Training Content

learning objectives:

  • Identify how you spend your time.
  • Understand the power of planning and prioritizing.
  • Get a complete picture of your workload in order to set priorities.
  • Analyze and manage procrastination.
  • Deal with interruptions and disruptions without destroying your productivity.
  • Clearly define work assignments and break them into manageable tasks.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing email more efficiently.
  • Identify the high cost of unfocused meetings.
  • Plan more effective meetings with specific outcomes.

Pre-course Assignment:

Participants will read a case study in advance of the first module and will be asked to respond to a brief series of prework questions in an online conference area prior to all three modules.

Module 1: The ABCs of Virtual Leadership

  • Understanding the unique attributes of a successful virtual leader
  • Learning how to build trust across your team when working from afar
  • Knowing how to create a level playing field among all team members
  • Applying new tips and techniques for creating social capital and building relationships

Module 2: Rituals and Rhythms of Virtual Teams

  • Understanding why virtual teams especially need explicit norms
  • Learning best practices norms for some of the toughest aspects of virtual teamwork
  • Sharing necessary norms associated with virtual meetings, use of email and IM, decision making, and more

Module 3: Managing Performance from Afar

  • Discovering new ways to keep virtual team members aligned, motivated, and energized
  • Delivering difficult performance feedback from a distance
  • Sustaining great performance through virtual celebrations, rewards, and recognition
