Lean Agile for Project Management

Information Technology (IT) organizations and software development teams are often overwhelmed with contrasting programs and competing priorities. They assume customer requirements are known and static—when they never are. Their workflow is full of delays, handoffs, rework and other forms of waste, extending lead times beyond what’s reasonable to compete or meet strategically important deadlines. Not with Lean Agile.

The Lean Agile Methodology and Scrum Master Certification course teaches teams to produce working software in much shorter periods of time, with fewer errors, by managing the development cycle in a collaborative environment with customers, developers, testers and business leaders.

Taught by Senior Scrum Masters and professional instructors, who are also Lean Masters and Six Sigma Master Black Belts, this course differs from other agile methodology courses because of its focus on the value-oriented discipline of Lean. You won’t learn to automate waste. Instead, you learn to lead teams to both remove waste from your processes and your requirements, thus developing value-added solutions. We also cover controversial ideas, such as how testing is non-value added but necessary, and why it is important to strive to eliminate testing where possible—and then how to make that happen.

Participants not only learn the Scrum Master role, but also the roles of product owner and the delivery team, including software developers, testers, business analysts and software architects. You learn how to run a successful Lean Agile team and all its roles, and how to lead multiple teams working concurrently on a development project. Plus, through hands-on simulations, we will complete two cycles of creation, practically applying the knowledge learned about Lean Agile and leading Lean Agile teams.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Integrate Lean Agile development methodologies into an existing Lean/continuous improvement framework, IT organization or software development function.
  • Develop user stories that describe customer requirements.
  • Conduct release planning and sprint planning using user stories and estimating techniques.
  • Manage sprint daily progress using such Lean Agile artifacts as the stand-up meeting.
  • Demonstrate the current status of the project through the use of such artifacts as the kanban board, burn-up and burn-down charts.
  • Manage a Lean Agile development team through a sprint—from requirements gathering through product demonstration.

    • Sprint planning (including sprint zero checklist)
    • Exercise—planning your sprints
    • Daily planning (including burn charts, kanban board, standup meeting agenda)
    • Software quality and testing
    • Simulation—product release 1 sprint 1

  • Day Four

    • Software demonstrations and deployment
    • Simulation—comprehensive release planning
    • Simulation—development sprint and demonstration

  • Day Five

    • Simulation—development sprint and demonstration
    • Course wrap-up
