New Parental Leave Laws in Washington D.C.

New Parental Leave Laws in Washington D.C.

Gain an understanding of current obligations for employee leave laws in the District of Columbia as well as any pending legislation to keep your company in compliance. Stronger employee leave protections under District of Columbia are on the horizon. Employers in D.C. already have obligations much greater than those in other jurisdictions, in particular with respect to providing paid (and unpaid) leave for employees who are parents. Small employers often do not realize that the obligation applies to them and larger employers often do not realize just how much is required. Pending before the Council is the Universal Paid Leave Act, which would further increase employers’ obligations by requiring employers to provide paid leave, in certain situations, for up to 16 weeks and to make payments to a special fund administered by the D.C. government. This topic helps businesses understand current obligations and any consequences for non-compliance. What’s more, it will provide a detailed description of any pending legislation with an analysis of the trends moving forward and tips for employers on how to adapt.
