Overview

Credit: 6 PDH

Length: 80 pages

A mechanical seal is a device that is primarily utilized to stop any form of leakage within mechanical rotating equipments. For decades, rotating equipment was sealed with compression gland packing. This is no longer permitted in many industries by current environmental standards, set forth by the federal regulations. With the development of and subsequent improvements of the mechanical seal, the leakage problem has been fixed to a large extent.

The performance of mechanical seals is greatly influenced by factors such as fluid pressure, service temperature, the nature and characteristics of the operating fluid, impurities, lubricating properties, rotating speed and hazard control measures. Mechanical seals are available in a multitude of styles and configurations suiting different applications. The standards of modern mechanical seals are widely defined by American Petroleum Institute, API Standard 682 ? Shaft Sealing Systems for Centrifugal and Rotary Pumps.

This 6 hour course provides a comprehensive overview of different types of mechanical seals and their characteristics and applications. Emphasis is placed not only on the operation of mechanical seals, but also on the environment where they operate, materials of construction and the support systems that help them survive.

This course is applicable to mechanical engineers working on rotating equipment, chemical engineers, operations and maintenance personnel, environmentalists, energy auditors as well as consultants and contractors who construct, build and manage facilities.
