Sales Initiative: Goal Planning

What does it take to be successful? A complicated question with a pretty simple answer: Plan for success.

Most people are familiar with setting a goal, but achieving a goal takes focus, time management, and a plan. To start, set a goal that motivates you. Name your number and be specific. When you’re creating your goal, make sure you define the objective and make sure it’s quantifiable. For example, I want to close one million dollars in new business and generate another million in repeat business this year. This might seem like a difficult task, but it’s already off to a good start. This goal is specific, measurable, and time-bound by a date.

Next, break it down. The end goal can feel big, overwhelming, and unmanageable. So break it into bite-size chunks- by quarter, month, week, and even day. A million dollars divided by 52 is a much smaller and more attainable number. Breaking your goal down by week will also help you to benchmark your success and quickly identify if you’re on track to meet your year-end goal.

Measure your efforts. Track your daily meetings and close ratios and then adjust your plan based on real metrics. Who knows? You may even be on track to surpass your goal. Keeping a record of your progress toward each goal daily will also help you evaluate the five most important things to accomplish tomorrow. Jot them down, commit to your goal daily, schedule the time you plan to spend reaching out to customers, and make it your only focus. Close your door, turn off your email, and forward inbound calls to voicemail. This will help you meet your daily goals and avoid distractions while prospecting.

Be consistent. Whether you choose to schedule your sales calls daily or once a week is up to you. But make sure you are consistent. It will help you develop a groove and eventually become second nature.

Takeaways: An idea accompanied by a date becomes a goal. Broken down becomes a plan. Backed by action becomes a success.
