Course description

The Process of Communication

One of our most popular courses, the Process of Communication focuses on the concept of "Communicative Competence." That is, ensuring that your message is heard and understood in the way you need it to be, meaning that you are effective in your communication, not just right. In order to be an amazing communicator, it's important to understand your own communication tendencies and be able to modify them, while remaining true to yourself, to be understood and appreciated by your audience. In this course you will learn about your communication style, how to listen and suspend judgement, and how to use specific tools to create a culture of open and effective communication.

We probably all agree that the world is becoming increasingly complex, with more and more “noise” thrown at us as an attempt at communication. The world is also changing faster than ever, whether with regard to technology, diversity, or even how we live and work.

Many of you may remember the old “Golden Rule” of being nice to people: “Do unto others as you would have done to you.” Or, in other words, “treat other people how you would like to be treated.” Interestingly, and maybe surprisingly, that rule is now out of date! Instead, we refer to the “Platinum Rule,” which states that we should treat other people how they would like to be treated. This is an important difference, and one that we will talk about quite a bit in this course. Our theme will be:

How can you adapt your communication style so that you are most effective – that is, so that you reach the intended listener in a way that will resonate with them?

This requires a shift in how we think, which means it’s not easy! But it can be done, with a little information, a little practice, and some accountability.

*This course can be customized for length, content and delivery method. We can offer any training session as e-learning or virtual learning or a combination of the two to fit your organization's needs.

Communicative Competence

There is a German sociologist and philosopher named Jürgen Habermas who has spent much of his life working on “communicative rationality,” which says that in order for humans to be reasonable and reach understanding, there must be successful communication.

One of his teachings is that human conflict is the result of miscommunication, and that miscommunication is the result of communicative incompetence. He goes on to say that communicative competence requires that:

  1. The truth of the statement shared by the speaker and the listener
  2. The listener understands the speaker’s intention, and
  3. The speaker adapts to the listener’s worldview.

In this course, we discuss ways in which to achieve “communicative competence” at work.

We are going to talk about the basics of communication theory, learn about our own personal preferences in how we communicate and how to recognize the personal preferences of others (so that we can adapt). We will also talk about a few tips to help you be more successful in your own communications.

And finally, we will offer you a safe space to practice your tools.

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Speak with colleagues in a way that is clear, articulate, and lacking in aggressive language and behaviors
  • Actively listen and suspend judgment while seeking to understand others’ views and opinions
  • Understand your own reactions and default communication styles in times of conflict and stress
  • Leverage the diverse knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences of colleagues to build trust and help people feel valued and part of a supportive team

Kim K.
I am happy to recommend Whiteboard Consulting Group. I participated in the Process of Coaching course and have referred to what I learned on a number of occasions. The great takeaway of "kindness and curiosity" as a starting point for difficult conversations has been a go to. I have used it frequently to diffuse stressful situations.

I have to admit I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the course. I learned a great deal about myself and how I interact with others.
Jim S.
The whole course was enjoyable. The facilitators presented material in an engaging way, and they are both very enthusiastic, which helped me concentrate.
